A Tailored Approach to Vaccination

From the desk of Dr. Ada-Mari Schoeman Inc.

At Dr. Ada-Mari Schoeman Inc., we believe in informed choice and evidence-based care. While we do not promote the use of all vaccines universally, Dr. Schoeman carefully recommends certain vaccinations that have proven to be life-saving and essential for protecting our community — especially in rural and high-risk environments.

Vaccination remains one of the most powerful tools in modern medicine to prevent serious illness. Our goal is to help you make the best decisions for your health and your family’s, with clear guidance on the vaccines we do recommend based on risk, age, and environment.

Why Certain Vaccines Matter

Vaccines help your immune system fight off serious infections before they can cause harm. Illnesses such as measles, meningitis, chickenpox, and shingles can lead to hospitalization, complications, or worse. When the risks are high, prevention is better than cure — and that’s where carefully selected vaccines play a key role.

Measles: A Preventable Risk

Measles is highly contagious and can be particularly dangerous for children. Outbreaks can spread quickly in schools and daycare environments. Dr. Schoeman strongly advises that all children be immunized against measles, not only for their own safety, but to protect the broader community from preventable outbreaks.

Vaccines Not Covered by the State – But Highly Recommended

Menactra (Meningitis Vaccine)

What it protects against: Meningococcal meningitis – a fast-acting, potentially fatal brain infection.

Who should get it: High schoolers, university students, or anyone in communal housing like hostels.

Why it matters: Meningitis can cause death or permanent damage in hours. This vaccine provides critical protection.

Varicella (Chickenpox Vaccine)

What it protects against: Chickenpox and its serious complications, such as pneumonia or brain inflammation.

Who should get it: Children who haven’t had chickenpox, and adults who never contracted it.

Note: This is a private vaccine, so book at our clinic to ensure your child is protected.

Highly Recommended Vaccine for Adults:

Zoster (Shingles Vaccine)

Who it’s for: Adults aged 50+.

Why: Shingles causes painful rashes and nerve pain. Early vaccination prevents flare-ups and long-term discomfort.

Pregnancy Vaccines

Dr. Schoeman recommends specific vaccines such as pertussis (whooping cough) for pregnant women.

These vaccines protect newborns from severe respiratory illnesses in their first weeks of life.

Highly Recommended Vaccine for Teenagers: HPV Vaccine

What it protects against: Certain strains of human papillomavirus linked to cervical cancer.

Recommended for: Girls aged 12–13, before becoming sexually active, for best protection.
